What Is Kennel Cough

Kennel cough can appear to be serious because your dog keeps hacking away or making choking noises, and this is disturbing, especially when it is accompanied by sneezing, runny nose, and eye discharges. While kennel cough also thought of as a problem that occurs when dogs stay at dog boarding facilities, this is not always the case.

The condition has many causes, and the common culprit being Bordetella bronchiseptica, which increases the risk for contracting other airborne viruses, such as the parainfluenza virus, canine distemper virus, and canine adenovirus, among others. Remember, dogs get kennel cough by inhaling the bacteria and/or virus particles in the air into their respiratory tract, which can be weakened by many factors.

The factors that can cause weakened respiratory tract among dogs include:

• Exposure to dog boarding facilities with poorly ventilated or crowded conditions
• Cold temperatures
• Stress from travelling
• Exposure to cigarette smoke, dust, and smog

Kennel cough can also be transmitted to dogs in other areas, such as day car, dog parks, and veterinarians’ offices, even around the neighborhood. When the dog is overly stressed, which often occurs in kennels where the conditions are not up to par with industry standards, the dog’s risk for contracting kennel cough also increases. Be sure to look for signs of stress, such as more anxiety and more barking, since these can be signs that the kennel staff members are not doing their jobs as well as expected.

Because kennel cough is contagious, it is important to keep the infected dog away from other dogs. It’s also important to have the dog checked by the veterinarian, which may include the administration of vaccinations. While kennel cough can be resolved on its own, the use of medications can minimize the symptoms and speed up recovery, allowing the dog to return to its dog boarding facility.
